The United Kingdom (UK) comprises four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The English Channel separates this cluster of island countries, or archipelago, from the mainland. After Brexit in 2016, the UK ceased to be a part of the European Union. Education System

The UK education system is similar to that of Education in Ireland. It is mainly categorized into four levels mentioned below:

Primary education: It includes pre-primary education.
Post-primary education: It is also known as secondary education.
Further education and training: This covers a range of vocational and academic courses.
Higher education: This includes universities and other higher institutions.

The National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) is responsible for measuring and evaluating the education standard and relating it to the level of achievements of qualifications. It relates these standards to the level of qualifications achieved. The NFQ also facilitates transfers between institutions if UK Student Visa conditions allow.

The universities here offer two types of courses:

Degree Courses: The degree is mostly Bachelor’s, Honorary Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral.
Non-degree Courses: A non-degree is a higher certificate, higher diploma, graduate diploma, or postgraduate diploma.

Universities also offer Pathway programs in business, social science, engineering, and pure and applied science. These serve as preparatory courses to help international students get into their choice of a bachelor's or master's degree.

Scholarships

Chevening Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded by the high commission and British embassies. It is available to professionals with prior leadership skills. The quantum of the grant is the full tuition fee, airfare, and living expenses. It is valid for one year and can be extended to two.

GREAT Scholarships

This scholarship is jointly funded by the UK Government’s GREAT Britain Campaign and the British Council. The grant is available to meritorious students. This program includes 99 postgraduate scholarships from 36 UK universities in a variety of subjects.

Scotland Saltire Scholarships

This scholarship is awarded by the Scottish government. It is awarded to candidates in the fields of science, healthcare, technology, creative industries, and renewable and clean energy. The quantum of the grant is £8000.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship

This scholarship is granted by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK. It is available to low-income and deserving candidates from Commonwealth countries. The quantum of the grant covers the entire tuition fees, living expenses, airfare, and maintenance expenses. Each year, around 700 students are given the chance to undertake postgraduate degrees at UK universities.
